Contraception, hey ladies: what a bitch, amirite?! For much of my adult life, contraception has been either a pain in the arse, just another thing I have to remember, a cause of panic, the bane of my existence, or some combination of the above.

The NuvaRing is a clear, flexible plastic ring - around the size and thickness of a hair-tie, but a little less flexible - that is self-inserted into the vagina and releases a low dose of progestogen and oestrogen. It prevents an unplanned pregnancy by preventing ovulation, and the ring stays in place for three weeks at a time. It's then removed for one week, then a new one is inserted.

As a compliment to the articles being posted here about various contraceptive methods, benefits, side effects, costs and user comments I thought it a nice addition to address the other side of contraception: the fail, the oopsy, the totally stupid moment where you threw caution to the wind and even the non-consensual sexual encounters.

Having been silent for a couple of months, I should maybe share what has kept me quiet. I am dismayed quite sad actually at some realisations I have come too. Is there any hope for equality I have asked myself a number of times in the past couple of months and I am almost tempted to say no.

What is it?: The diaphragm is a shallow, dome-shaped cup with a flexible rim. It is made of silicone. You insert it into the vagina. When it is in place, it covers the cervix.
The Benefits: There are many benefits to the diaphragm; there are no physiological effects, you are able to use it during your period, it is immediately effective and reversible, it can be used during breast feeding, when placed correctly you are unable to feel it and it can reduce (not prevent) the likelihood of STDs such as chlamydia.
The Downsides: The Diaphragm can be difficult to place and must be inserted each time you have intercourse and can be pushed out of place during sexual intercourse. Some women develop urinary infections or develop vaginal irritation.
Availability: The Diaphragm is easily obtained, you see a health care provider to get a prescription for the diaphragm. When you go to get your diaphragm, your provider will examine you to make sure you do not have a condition that would rule out using a diaphragm. Then your provider will find the correct size for you and will give you information about using, inserting, and removing the diaphragm.
Effectiveness: If always used correctly, 6 out of 100 women who use the diaphragm will get pregnant each year. If not always used correctly, 16 out of 100 women who use the diaphragm will get pregnant per year.
Costs: Diaphragms may be purchased at a pharmacy or clinic with a prescription. Your GP or sexual health clinic provider can do the examination so depending on your medicare status this cancost anything from nothing to around $75. Diaphragms average from $15 to $75. For insertion spermicide gel, jelly, or cream costs from about $8 to $17 a kit.
User Review: I don't know too much about diaphragms so I was unable to review the contraception and its effectiveness but I read some reviews and majority of women had great things to say. They found it easy to insert and remove and a very effective birth control. Women said they liked it over other contraception options as they experienced no symptoms.
